The Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ghana office of the world’s leading accountancy body – the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) – to train its staff on proper accountancy and finance procedures.
Speaking to the B&FT after the signing ceremony, the Controller and Accountant General, Eugene Ofosuhene, said the time has come for staff of the CAGD to have their skills sharpened to meet the changing trends, especially in new accounting standards and procedures.
“It is a privilege and an opportunity to upgrade and improve the CAGD staff. We will also commit ourselves to the course, and to whatever we agree and have signed we will show commitment and support.
“We at CAG need to be abreast with changing trends and standards within the finance and accounting world. This training, we believe, will help make us to become better accounts and finance administrators.”
Mr. Ofosuhene further stated that the MoU will cover other issues, including “helping us compile our accounts properly and improving accounting instructions, and also ensure that we execute our mandate in a very effective manner. I would therefore urge all of us as a department to show commitment and make sure we benefit immensely from the partnership”.
On his part, Portfolio Head of ACCA East and West Africa, Norman Williams, said signing the MoU has come at an opportune time.
“Core to this MoU is building capacity in critical areas like public sector financial standards. ACCA is indeed ready to provide support on building the finance and accounting competencies of CAGD staff.”
He further stated that the ACCA will ensure that the Controller and Accountant General’s Department is abreast with the latest developments in accounting.
Present at the signing ceremony from the ACCA office Ghana was Doris Ahiati, Head ACCA Ghana; Salome Addai, the Business Development Executive and Public-Sector Champion ACCA Ghana; and Kwaku Anim Boadu, Education Manager.
